The start of my Model Railway Hobby - Rekindled from my childhood years

In the latter months of 2017 I found myself with rather a few hours to spare. I had collected a few items of model railways over the years but never got around to continuing where I left off as a kid. A chance to buy something at a bargain basement price from someone who did not really know what is was they were selling. It was a DCC controller and DCC locomotive. It was the DCC part they did not know about and to be fair, I did try to explain.

I went on the internet to learn what I could about this DCC thingy and soon I ended up with the layout featured here. It was a very steep learning curve and now I am building a layout in the spare bedroom.

During the time I have spent at home I have started the new layout, building it from the wooden frames from a double and a single bed. I stripped off all the material, screwed on lengths of wood for the legs and joined the all together. I used 6mm MDF for the tops and added load bearing supports as required. I have planned the layout to include two stations from where I was born which is Barnsley, South Yorkshire and around the date when I was born. A lot has changed in the area and now only one station remains. I have a lift-out section which will be made to swing open and will be made to represent the Oaks Viaduct, another thing that has been lost through history. There will be another station, a fictional one which will include a parcel office. A heritage line will be featured to show off my pair of Castles and I will be featuring a diorama of the Railway Children Film. There will be a few more little surprises on the way but they will feature with other items on my YouTube channel as they are done. A link to my channel is on the Home Page.

The Lounge Layout as its best known is up for a giveaway. At the time of writing this I have just short of 200 subscribers on YouTube and when I get to 500 a draw will be made  to give away the layout. News of the giveaway, the rules and conditions will appear on my channel and on this site closer to the time.

I am currently researching into as many details as possible about the old Barnsley Courthouse Station and the Barnsley Exchange Station. My Mom worked as a ‘Clippy’ (Bus Conductor) collecting fares and my dad was a bus driver, both worked at the bus station located in between the two stations. I do have access to quite a few photos from books and the internet but there are some details which still remain a mystery. I do have someone to speak to who knows someone who knows virtually everything there is to know about Barnsley’s railways.
